On June 23rd the Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated by Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski at Our Lady of Mercy Academy. The overflowing crowd filled the Chapel and auditorium as hundreds of OLMA Alumnae, faculty, students, family, and friends gathered to celebrate the legacy of nearly 100 years.
Everyone was welcomed to the celebration by Margaret Myhan, who spoke of the day as a mix of sadness and gratitude. Gratitude to those who were there and to the many who traveled to be part of it and gratitude to the Sisters of Mercy of Brooklyn who began the journey for us all.
Bishop Zglejszewski used his homily to recognize that OLMA is more than a school. It is a beacon of faith and excellence. It is a place that allows young women to become what they are supposed to be in life. He spoke of the echoes of history within
the walls but assured us all that we were there to celebrate the enduring and ongoing legacy of Our Lady of Mercy Academy.
After Mass all were welcomed to walk through the school and then attend a reception held in Kieran Hall.
Throughout the day there were many taking pictures, some posing in groups on the Senior stairs and people gathering everywhere to reminisce. Families walked through the halls, checked out the locker rooms, or sat quietly in the Chapel. There was laughter and more than a few tears but there was always what Bishop Zglejszewski called a spirit of home and community
